what is diastasis recti

What is Diastasis Recti (DR?)

What is it Diastasis Recti?

Essentially, DR is the natural separation of the abdominal muscles that occurs during pregnancy.

Diastasis recti image Almost 100% of pregnancy women develop DR by the third trimester, and nearly all women have a diastasis of at least 16mm by weeks 35-39 of pregnancy.

The types of exercise women with DR can do is increasing as research and evidence progresses.
This means that women can do MORE than previously thought without worsening symptoms

Every woman's postpartum healing is different.
Some women will heal naturally without intervention, while others will require more clinical work with a pelvic floor specialist.
Rather than "closer the gap" between the muscles, recent research has found that regaining tension in the linea alba (the connective tissue thats in between) is more important postpartum.
Recovery times can vary significantly for individuals: more than half of woman still have significant separation 8 weeks post-delivery, and although some "recover" by 6 months, many haven't fully recovered after 1 year.
Wearing Postnatal compression can be a really useful tool to help your postpartum recovery and optimise your healing time. Depending on the type of birth you have will depend which compression garments will best suit you.
