Foam Boards and Inserts
Smoother results
from the inside out
Foam boards and compression inserts are worn inside your abdominal binder or compression garment during the early stages of recovery. They apply additional even pressure to the treated area, helping to prevent seroma formation, reduce irregular swelling, and encourage smooth skin retraction for better results.
Many surgeons recommend them as a standard part of post operative care after tummy tuck, abdominal liposuction, and DIEP flap reconstruction. If your surgeon has advised you to use foam boards or inserts, we stock a range of options to suit different garments and recovery stages.
When foam boards and inserts are recommended
- After tummy tuck to prevent seroma and encourage even healing
- After abdominal liposuction to smooth the treated area
- After DIEP flap reconstruction to support the abdominal donor site
- When your surgeon has noted areas of uneven swelling or fluid
- As a complement to your abdominal binder throughout the wearing period

What are foam boards
What do foam boards and inserts actually do?
Foam boards and compression inserts are flat or contoured pieces of medical foam worn inside your abdominal binder directly against the skin. They work by distributing the pressure from your binder more evenly across the abdominal surface, which helps to prevent fluid from pooling in one area and reduces the risk of seroma formation after surgery.
They also help to smooth out any irregularities in swelling during the healing process, which can contribute to a more even result. Some surgeons routinely recommend them for all abdominal procedure patients, while others suggest them only if fluid accumulation is noted at a post operative review.
How to use them
How to wear foam boards correctly inside your garment
Foam inserts are placed between your skin and the inside of your abdominal binder. They should sit flat and cover the area your surgeon has indicated, usually the full width of the abdominal area. Some patients wear a thin layer of clothing between the foam and the skin for additional comfort, though this is a personal preference.
Your foam insert should feel firm but not painful. If you notice significant discomfort, uneven pressure, or any change in your wound site, contact your surgical team. Our specialist fitters are also available to advise on positioning and garment fit if you are finding your setup uncomfortable.

Frequently asked
Your questions answered
Do I definitely need foam boards after my surgery?
Not always. Foam boards and inserts are recommended by some surgeons as standard practice and by others only in specific cases. If your surgeon has recommended them, we have the right products. If you are unsure, check with your surgical team before ordering.
How long do I need to use foam inserts for?
This depends on your surgeon's instructions and your individual recovery. Many patients use foam boards for the duration of the Stage 1 compression period up to four to six weeks, though your surgeon may advise differently based on how your healing is progressing.
Can I wear foam boards with any abdominal binder?
Foam inserts are designed to be worn inside an abdominal binder. Inserts can be cut to size without fraying. If you need help choosing a binder to pair with your inserts, our fitters can advise on compatible options.
What is a seroma and how do foam inserts help prevent it?
A seroma is a pocket of fluid that can develop under the skin after surgery, particularly after tummy tuck and liposuction. Foam boards help by applying even pressure across the abdominal surface, reducing the space where fluid can pool and supporting the skin as it reattaches to the underlying tissue.
