Abdominal Binders

Abdominal Binders

Support where you
need it most

An abdominal binder provides firm, targeted compression across the abdomen in the early weeks after surgery. Unlike a full girdle, a binder focuses specifically on the abdominal area, making it the preferred first stage garment after tummy tuck, DIEP flap reconstruction, and abdominal liposuction.

We stock abdominal binders from Lipoelastic and Macom in a range of heights and sizes. Both brands produce medical grade binders designed specifically for post surgical recovery, and our specialist fitters can help you choose the right height and fit for your procedure.

What to look for in an abdominal binder

  • The correct height for your surgical area — shorter binders suit upper abdominal procedures, longer binders cover more of the torso
  • A hook and eye or velcro fastening for easy adjustment as swelling reduces
  • Medical grade compression, not general shapewear
  • A size based on your waist measurement, taken before surgery if possible
  • Foam boards or inserts if recommended by your surgeon to prevent seroma

About abdominal binders

What is an abdominal binder and do you need one?

An abdominal binder is a wide compression band worn around the abdomen after surgery. Unlike a full post surgery girdle which covers the hips and lower body, a binder focuses specifically on the abdominal wall, providing firm, targeted support to the area most affected by procedures such as tummy tuck and DIEP flap reconstruction.

Most surgeons will recommend wearing an abdominal binder from the first day after surgery. Some hospitals provide one as part of your aftercare, but the quality and fit of hospital garments varies considerably. Many patients find that investing in a well fitted medical grade binder makes a significant difference to their comfort and recovery experience.

Choosing the right height

23cm or 31cm — which binder height do you need?

Lipoelastic abdominal binders are available in two heights. The 23cm binder provides coverage from the lower ribs to just above the hips and suits most standard tummy tuck procedures. The 31cm binder extends further and is better suited to patients who have had a full abdominoplasty with a longer incision, or those who need coverage into the hip area.

If you are unsure which height is right for your surgery, our specialist fitters are available in person at our Maidstone and London studios, or via virtual appointment. We will help you make the right choice before you order.

Frequently asked

Your questions answered

How long do I need to wear an abdominal binder after tummy tuck?

Most surgeons recommend wearing an abdominal binder continuously for the first four to six weeks after abdominoplasty, removing it only to shower. After this, you may transition to a lighter Stage 2 compression garment. Always follow your surgeon's specific guidance.

What is the difference between an abdominal binder and a post surgery girdle?

An abdominal binder focuses specifically on the abdominal area and is typically used in the first weeks after surgery. A post surgery girdle covers a wider area including the hips and thighs and is often used as a Stage 2 garment once initial swelling has reduced.

Do I need foam boards inside my binder?

Some surgeons recommend foam boards or flat inserts worn inside the binder to prevent seroma and encourage smooth skin retraction. Ask your surgeon whether this is recommended for your procedure — we stock a range of foam inserts if so.

Can I get help choosing the right binder?

Yes. Our specialist fitters are available in person in Maidstone and London, and virtually from anywhere in the world. We can help you choose the right brand, height, and size based on your specific procedure and measurements.
