Choosing to have tummy tuck surgery is a big decision—and a very personal one. It’s a step toward feeling more comfortable and confident in your body. As you begin your recovery, one of the most important things you can do is wear the right compression garment to support your healing from the inside out.
We know it can feel a little overwhelming with so many FAJAs and styles out there, but that’s exactly what we’re here for. At The Fitting Service, we’ll help you find a garment that fits your body, your surgery, and your recovery—so you can focus on feeling comfortable, secure, and on track with your healing journey.
💡 Did you know
That the word FAJA is the colombian term for a girdle, their unique shaping qualities help maintain posture whilst holding the body in shape.
Before choosing your post tummy tuck compression garment, it is important to consider whether you may benefit from a petite garment or a regular garment. Even if you are not petite in height (5ft 3 and under), you may find if you have a short torso that a petite compression garment will be more comfortable for your recovery.
😍 Our top tip: Where possible choose a girdle with legs for your immediate post surgery garment. This allows you to have extended compression to help with flow and fluid retention.
Does the fastening type really matter?
Yes—it does. It’s important to choose a garment that you can manage yourself, especially in the early days of recovery. While zip-fastening styles are convenient, they don’t offer much flexibility once your swelling starts to go down. That’s why we usually recommend zip-fastening garments for the second or third stage of your recovery. They’re a great option for longer-term wear once your body has settled a little more.
Consider an open gusset for ease post surgery. After your tummy tuck procedure you may find you have reduced mobility and taking on and off your garment difficult, for this reason all our stage one compression garments have either a guesset fastening or an open gusset for your ease and comfort.
Many people like to feel prepared for their tummy tuck surgery and purchase their compression garment before surgery. It’s actually very common to need different sizes throughout the recovery journey , especially if you’re wearing your garment for the full 12 weeks as advised. Some surgeons include the first-stage garment as part of the surgery package, so it’s always a good idea to check what's provided before buying. In many cases, you might just need to purchase a spare garment for washing or for later stages of healing when a better fit is needed.
One of the most common questions we hear is: “Can I buy my compression garment before surgery?” And the answer is—yes, absolutely. In fact, many people prefer to feel prepared by having their garment ready to wear straight after their procedure.
If you're shopping before surgery , it's perfectly fine to use your current measurements . After your tummy tuck, you’ll have some swelling, bandages, and padding to account for, so starting with your before-surgery size makes sense.
When it comes to sizing, always focus on your hip measurement , especially for tummy tuck or body garments. If you’re between sizes, we recommend opting for the larger size . A compression garment should feel snug as if you were wearing skinny jeans on your body, but not restrictive—it’s there to support your healing, not make you feel uncomfortable and restrict flow.
💡 Our Top Tip
We recommend Manual Lymphatic Drainage alongside wearing your compression to help drain toxins, fluid and swelling.
Some surgeons include some Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) with your package, if you would like more information about MLD therapists near you please contact us

A stage one compression garment after a tummy tuck, depending on your surgeons recommendation and if you are having multiple procedures, would be a longer post surgery girdle with legs or a larger garment to allow for swelling. This is worn for up to 2 weeks.
A second stage garment could be a girdle without legs, or a tighter garment as your swelling has reduced. This is worn from week 2 to week 12.
A third stage garment potentionally could be a waist sculptor to help maintain results, this would be worn from week 12.
Every surgery is unique and personal to you, we always advise to go with your surgeons recommendations and what feels comfortable for you.
We recommend to purchase two garments, one to wear and one to wash.
