Their Story
In summary, unbelievable shock after 30 years - I should have had a yearly mammogram so blame myself for that. The lump was found after a 3 year mammogram gap, and I was referred to hospital of my choice.
Treatment was generally good. I had a complication after first surgery, and the hospital checked it every week. Having a woman surgeon was important to me - she was more understanding and agreed to extra surgery of uplift on the other side.
I had to fight for symmetry of breasts, which should be standard practice and not considered cosmetic surgery. This was frustrating but important to advocate for yourself.
My breast physically looks better now for the first time in 30 years. However, I always worry about every ache and pain and the possibility of recurrence - that's something that stays with you.
What Helped More Than Expected
Thinking of similar operation 30 years ago, much better results this time. Medical advances have made such a difference. The techniques and outcomes are dramatically improved compared to what was available three decades ago.
What I Wish I'd Known Beforehand
Complex choices to make, various operations all unexpected major surgery. You have to think what suits you best. I had to fight for symmetry of breasts which should be standard practice and not cosmetic surgery. Be prepared to advocate for yourself and what you need.
