Jackie's Story

I had surgery on the NHS for breast cancer, which included a mastectomy and axial node clearance. The NHS took care of assigning me to a surgical team.

One of the small things that made a big difference was the heart-shaped cushion I was given by the hospital. It seems like such a simple thing, but it provided comfort and support exactly where I needed it during recovery.

Looking back, I wish I had known more about the long-term effects of having all your lymph nodes removed. It's something that has ongoing implications that I wasn't fully prepared for.

What Helped More Than Expected

Heart-shaped cushion I was given by the hospital. This simple comfort item provided support under my arm and made resting so much more comfortable than I expected. It's the little things that can make a big difference.

What I Wish I'd Known Beforehand

Having all your lymph nodes out will make it likely you'll have lymphoedema. This is a long-term risk that requires ongoing management. I wish someone had explained this more clearly so I could have been better prepared for the possibility.
